Damen awarded seismic research vessels contract

Oilfield Technology,

Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam, part of Damen Shipyards Group, has been contracted again by Rederij Groen after delivering two vessels, the ‘Aquarius-G’ and the ‘Astra-G’, earlier this year.

The new Seismic Research Support Vessels (SRSV) are expected to be delivered in Q3 of next year, while shipowner Groen has taken an option on a third identical vessel to be delivered in 2015.

The new SRSVs will be 35 m by 8.70 m and will be propelled by two Azimuth thrusters, each powered by a 500 kW electric motor. Three Caterpillar gensets will provide electrical power. Groen is planning to use the vessels for work in the seismic industry worldwide.

Similar to the original vessels delivered by Damen, the new SRSVs will operate alongside other vessels, assisting with board-to-board transshipment of goods and equipment. As seismic research is done at low speeds, stability and manoeuverability are important, and according to Groen, the new design “allows just that”.

Damen’s newbuild and repair yard in Stellendam has a longstanding relationship with Rederij Groen, performing maintenance and repair for their entire fleet of more than 20 offshore vessels and having built all their other SRSVs.
