IPTC 2014 Kuala Lumpur: preview

The eighth edition of the International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC) will be held 10 - 12 December 2014 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Returning to Kuala Lumpur for the second time, this edition of IPTC will be hosted by Malaysia’s national oil company PETRONAS and co-hosted by Shell and Schlumberger.

Tan Sri Dato’ Shamsul Azhar Abbas, President and CEO, PETRONAS is the Honourable Advisor and Dato’ Wee Yiaw Hin, Executive Vice President and CEO of Upstream International, PETRONAS along with Matthias Bichsel, Former Director of Projects and Technology, Royal Dutch Shell, and Patrick Schorn, Executive Vice President of Operations, Schlumberger; serve as Executive Committee Co-Chairmen.

With a theme of “Innovation and Collaboration: Keys to Affordable Energy”, participants from around the globe including industry leaders, professionals, decision and policy makers, as well as senior government officials and NGO representatives will converge on Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, a significant South East Asian producer and service centre of oil and natural gas.

Dato’ Wee Yiaw Hin emphasised that “Asia is the engine of growth for the global economy and it needs a sustainable energy solution to aid in the development of its hydrocarbon resources.” He further highlighted that the event is timely in providing a platform for industry and business experts to share knowledge to address challenges and opportunities and to seek “collaboration opportunities for expertise and knowledge development within the region’s oil and gas industry. Hence, the theme of this year’s IPTC is Innovation and Collaboration: Keys to Affordable Energy.”

The combined strengths of IPTC’s four sponsoring societies, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), will ensure a balanced technical programme covering geoscience, subsurface and surface engineering.

This year, the Executive Plenary Session will tackle the theme with discussions around innovation and evolution in business models, technologies and the collaboration between industry players in order to bring resources on stream.

Moderated by CNBC Anchor, Sri Jegarajah, the session will feature an Industry Address by Dato' Wee Yiaw Hin of PETRONAS, and panellists; Matthias Bichsel, former Director - Projects and Technology of Royal Dutch Shell, Jean-Georges Malcor, Chief Executive Officer of CGG, Patrick Schorn, President – Operations and Integration of Schlumberger, and Datuk Mohd Anuar Taib, Senior Vice President - Upstream Malaysia of PETRONAS.

The multi-disciplinary programme features further Plenary Sessions, Panel Sessions and 67 Technical Sessions covering aspects of exploration, development and production, drilling and completions, geosciences and geophysics, reservoir, unconventionals, and midstream gas."

The event will welcome over 800 participating organisations from over 40 countries, and the exhibition will showcase the latest technological advancements, innovations and achievements from various countries to a highly qualified, multidisciplinary, business and technical delegation. The attendance of high calibre industry professionals at the event will provide exhibitors with the unique opportunity to reach existing and potential customers specifically interested in the opportunities, partnerships and technologies they have to offer.

Other highlights such as Young Professionals Workshop themed “Technology and Management: Creating Affordable Energy for Our Future”; Education Week and Education Days will also be held in conjunction with the conference and exhibition. These elements will bring young professionals, international students from selected universities, local high school students and teachers together to gain insight into the energy industry.
