Statoil awards Samsung a Johan Sverdrup contract

Statoil has awarded Samsung Heavy Industries a construction contract at its Johan Sverdrup oilfield. The fabrication contract worth NOK7 billion, and Samsung will be responsible for both the processing and riser platforms. The topsides will be fabricated at Samsung’s shipyard in South Korea.
Johan Sverdrup’s processing and riser platforms
Weighing approximately 26 000 t, the function of the Johan Sverdrup processing platform is to ensure oil stabilisation when processing oil into rich gas. Whilst the riser platform, which weighs approximately 22 000 t, will manage oil and gas exports, water and gas injection and any future tie-ins.
The topsides for the Johan Sverdrup drilling platform and the accommodation platform have already been awarded to Aibel and Kværner Stord, whilst 65% of the equipment packages have been awarded to suppliers with Norwegian billing addresses. Thus, with this most recent award included, all contracts for the four topsides have been granted.
Previously, Aker Solutions has been awarded the contract for engineering work and purchase of equipment packages for the two aforementioned topsides.
A competitive bid in a tough competition
“Samsung has extensive experience in manufacturing such installations and we already have a good partnership with the supplier. They have provided a competitive bid in a tough international competition,” says Margareth Øvrum, Executive Vice President for Technology, Projects and Drilling at Statoil.
