OriginOil’s frack technology exceeds expected energy efficiency

Oilfield Technology,

OriginOil, developer of Electro Water Separation™ (EWS), the high-speed, chemical-free process to clean up large quantities of water, demonstrated the very low energy cost of its EWS technology in treating frac flowback and produced water during large-scale testing at a salt water disposal well in Western Colorado.

“We knew from early lab tests that our energy usage was very low, but now in the field, we see that the numbers are even more impressive than expected. Our Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) averaged 0.22 kWh per barrel including pumping and membrane energy,” explained Lee Portillo, OriginOil VP of Engineering.

These CLEAN-FRAC numbers are over 60% lower than Halliburton’s published energy usage of just over 0.56 kWh per barrel for its CleanWave Mini-Water Treatment system.

“While using less energy than a leading competitor, CLEAN-FRAC also removes a greater percentage of contaminants, while eliminating most bacteria and dissolved organics, a real challenge in high-volume applications. CLEAN-FRAC is the optimal solution for chemical-free oil and gas water treatment,” Portillo added.

The system tested was OriginOil’s CLEAN-FRAC™ end-to-end system, configured with aniSep™ UltraFiltration (UF) membrane system from TriSep Corporation to provide downstream polishing. CLEAN-FRAC systems are packaged with best-in-class downstream steps to meet a customer’s specific water quality needs.

On 27 May 2014, a showcase was held at the headquarters of OriginOil licensee, Industrial Systems Inc. (ISI) on Colorado’s Western Slope, the showcase featured the CLEAN-FRAC™ field scale system, which is designed to process frac flowback and produced water at a rate of up to 1500 bpd, to the exact purity levels that customers require.

A company video documented the event.
