Oilfield Technology,

OriginOil Inc., developer of Electro Water Separation™ (EWS), recently demonstrated its ability to match laboratory performance in the field when it operated at a 1000 bpd capacity on contaminated water from a salt water disposal well in Western Colorado.

“A number of our domestic and international customers were waiting for this validation of theCLEAN-FRAC technology before moving forward with orders,” said Bob Isom, CEO of Delta, Colorado based Industrial Systems, Inc. (ISI), the OriginOil licensee that hosted a recent showcase. “We believe we will soon see substantial orders for both our movable tanks and water treatment systems using OriginOil technology.”

The system on trial was OriginOil’s new CLEAN-FRAC™ full treatment system. The CLEAN-FRAC design combines OriginOil’s Electro Water Separation (EWS) technology with selected downstream polishing steps to meet a customer’s specific water purity needs.

The CLEAN-FRAC 1000 configuration at the Colorado showcase coupled EWS with an iSep™ ultrafiltration (UF) membrane system from TriSep Corporation.

In the first month of field operation prior to and since the showcase, this CLEAN-FRAC 1000 unit demonstrated better than 99% removal of turbidity, suspended solids and oil from the salt water disposal well influent stream.

Test results

  • Turbidity was reduced from 138 NTU to 0.3 (99.8% removal).
  • Total Suspended Solids were reduced from 60 mg/litre to non-detectable (100% removal).
  • Oil in water was reduced from 169 mg/liter to 1.4 (99.2% removal).

“The Delta Showcase gave us the ability to continuously operate the CLEAN-FRAC 1000 in a real world environment processing actual frac flowback and produced water”, stated Bill Charneski, general manager of the OriginOil oil and gas division, “The system not only meets our performance expectations, but the field operations also verified the design parameters can successfully scale to larger commercial capacities.”

Charneski added, “Whether EWS technology powers a licensed system or CLEAN-FRAC itself, the technology is ready for commercial adoption. Working on the integration of the technology for end-to-end water treatment systems with partners, such as Pearl Blue Water or Tri-Sep, is a crucial stamp of approval for the OriginOil team.”

On 27 May 2014, a showcase was held at the headquarters of OriginOil licensee, Industrial Systems Inc. (ISI) on Colorado’s Western Slope. The showcase featured the CLEAN-FRAC™ 1000 system, which is designed to process frac flowback and produced water at a rate of up to 1000 bpd, to the exact purity levels that customers require.
