Improving data management cuts North Sea operating costs

North Sea operators are turning to a Scottish data visualisation company as one means of cutting their costs in response to the continuing low oil price.

Aberdeen-based Nugensis has developed a software system called AIM (Asset Intelligence Management) for the oil and gas industry which allows operators to improve real time data monitoring of diverse assets used in North Sea operations, thereby improving overall efficiency. AIM enables companies to house all available data under one simple to understand interface and view it on a mobile phone, tablet or desktop.

AIM has already been purchased by Apache Corporation, through its North Sea subsidiaries, and Nugensis is currently in discussion with other production companies.

Ian Milligan, Managing Director of Nugensis explains:

“The technology gives our oil and gas customers the ability to input, track and visualise legacy asset performance, integrity data and compliance data through a personalised simple and intuitive interface on their phone, tablet and desktop.

“The digital oilfield has produced a deluge of information for asset teams that can sometimes drown and dilute key information. Oil and gas companies don’t need more data; they need the right data, at the right time. Our data visualisation technology gives the oil and gas industry real time updates whenever and wherever they need it.”

AIM is designed to help operators tackle a number of challenges, including:

  • Visual alerts - it is critically important to operators to monitor when things go outside control limits or KPIs are not being met.
  • Accessing data quickly – key information often has to be input into a central spreadsheet by multiple employees, leading to delays, with staff having to wait for access to such documents.
  • Data overload – getting the most out of current, available data is vital and useful information needs to be discernible at a glance.
  • Data quality issues – using historic data is complex and time consuming as staff often have to recalculate formulas each time to ensure data consistency.
  • Making sense of data – data is often shared via emails with attachments, which is hard to interact with and it is difficult to get value out of historic data.
