Eastern Mediterranean gas discoveries provide boost for industry

Oilfield Technology,

Large new gas discoveries in the region have been estimated to hold as much as 122 trillion f3 of natural gas in total and are attracting the interest of international operators and service providers keen to exploit these opportunities.

However, conditions are harsh, meaning that products have to be robust enough to withstand a range of challenges, including corrosion and fatigue.

Sandvik’s range of products for the upstream oil and gas industry are suited for the manufacture of subsea infrastructure to be used in such challenging conditions. The company has been involved in the delivery of several major projects in the Levant Basin. It has supplied several thousand km of Sandvik SAF 2507® umbilical tubing, Sandvik Sanicro® 28 – a high-alloy high strength austenitic stainless steel for OCTG downhole production tubing, and downhole control lines and chemical injection lines in seamless Alloy 625 (Sanicro™ 60) and Alloy 825 (Sanicro™ 41).

Sandvik SAF 2507® is a super-duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steel for service in highly corrosive conditions. The grade is characterised by resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in chloride-bearing environments, pitting and crevice corrosion and general corrosion. It also has a very high mechanical strength, physical properties that offer design advantages, high resistance to erosion corrosion and corrosion fatigue, and good weldability – all of which make it ideal for use in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Sanicro™ 60 is a high strength, austenitic nickel-chromium alloy that exhibits resistance to pitting corrosion, intergranular corrosion and is virtually immune to SCC in chloride containing environments. Alloy 825 is an industry standard material with high mechanical strength and corrosion-resistant properties that are cost-efficient.
