Petrobras signs an agreement with a project aimed at fishermen in lagoon systems around the Campos Basin

The project, selected by the Petrobras Socio-environmental Program, will work with almost 800 direct participants from traditional fishing communities in the municipalities of Cabo Frio, São Pedro da Aldeia, Saquarema and Maricá until 2024, totalling 24 months of duration.

Considered by environmentalists as the largest permanent hypersaline lagoon in the world, with 220 km², Lagoa de Araruama, in the Lagos Region of Rio de Janeiro, will be one of the areas served by the initiative, which has as a priority audience, in addition to fishermen and their families, women, blacks, people with disabilities and local leaders.

In Lagoa de Maricá, it is located in the Environmental Protection Area (APA) of Maricá, created in 1984, which houses a remnant of Atlantic Forest, with 496 hectares of restinga vegetation. This region is home to a large number of artisanal fishermen and has attracted nature-oriented tourism.

One of the project's objectives is to promote the sustainable use of lagoon systems to strengthen the integrated economic development of local communities, based on participatory monitoring of fisheries production and the valuation of the production chain. In this sense, it will work in the development of community-based tourism, in environmental education actions and in training in fish management and marketing, with a focus on generating income for the communities.

The highlight is the creation of the social certification of fish, which, ultimately, will promote commercial approximation between consumers and fishermen and the valorisation of products, improving the remuneration of these workers.
