Inmarsat announces Rolls-Royce partnership

Inmarsat has announced its participation in the Advanced Autonomous Waterborne Applications Initiative (AAWA), a project launched by Rolls-Royce. The project is funded by Tekes, a Finnish funding agency for technology and innovation, and is designed to bring together universities and research institutes to analyse the economic, social, legal, regulatory and technological factors regarding autonomous ships.
Inmarsat will provide the satellite communication link and platform, an essential component of remote control capability. Inmarsat’s Fleet Xpress service forms the basis of the hybrid Ka/L-band mobile satellite system and will be delivered through the company’s Global Xpress and L-band constellations.
President of Inmarsat Maritime, Ronald Spithout, said: “The launch of Inmarsat’s Global Xpress mobile broadband network, which forms the heart of the new Fleet Xpress service, is a real turning point for the future of maritime industry and ideally lends itself to the AAWA Initiative.”
Esa Jokioinen, Head of Blue Ocean Team, Rolls-Royce, commented: “We are pleased to have partners, such as Inmarsat, as part of that team, enabling us to take the first concrete steps towards making remote controlled and autonomous ship applications a reality.”
