Mieko Mahi exhibit

Oilfield Technology,

This Valentine's, fall in love with the offshore industry from the eyes of famed oil and gas photographer Mieko Mahi. Mahi will exhibit alluring images of the offshore world at the Valentine's Day Art Stroll held 7 February 2015 at the Silver Street Studios, 2000 Edwards Street, Suite 308, from 5 to 9 p.m.

For the past 25 years, Mahi has made her living sliding around greasy rig floors, scrambling up stairs on drill ships in rolling seas, and peering out of helicopters as they whiz past offshore drilling rigs. Her work attire: a hard hat and steel-toed boots.

Commissioned by energy magazines and leading oil and gas firms, Mahi travels the world to photograph onshore and offshore drilling rigs, barges, pipelines, and oil refineries. Over the years, her work has become increasingly artistic, drawing on her art education to capture the hidden beauty of the oil and gas industry. She juxtaposes the marvels of engineering against the natural world, finding angles, lighting, and colour that create captivating images.

"I don't take pictures," she likes to say. "I create them. The energy industry is so global, I think bringing a touch of art to it is long overdue."

Her latest project involves black-and-white portraiture of the petroleum industry's top 100 leaders and icons. Based near Houston, Mieko's award-wining photographs have been published hundreds of times on the covers and inside of industry trade publications. Her work also appears in annual reports and corporate brochures. Some of her most striking images hang in maritime museum exhibits and the offices of energy companies in the U.S., Middle East, and Europe. "Mieko's petroleum images portray the beauty of industrial imaging and appeals to all of our visitors," says Phil Barnes, Curator, Texas Maritime Museum in Rockport, Texas.

Mahi's work can regularly be seen by the public at the Silver Street Studios on the second Saturday of each month from 2 to 5 p.m. She will be available at that time to photograph artistic portraits of individuals for a nominal fee.
