Petrofac has launched a new online training course approved by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) to address oil spill preparedness.

The DECC Level 1 course is aimed at personnel who may undertake the role of Offshore On-Scene Commander (OSC) during an oil spill incident.

It was created in consultation with industry Offshore Installation Manages and provides training relating to the UK’s regulatory requirements in the event of an oil spill. The course is divided into modules that feature digital animation, video and interactive activities created by Petrofac’s e-learning specialists, Oilennium.

The course is a comprehensive overview of an offshore incident from the initial sighting of oil to the completion of the response. The course is necessary for anyone who may take the role of an OSC. It must be renewed every three years.

Upon completion of the course users can reference the e-learning content for 12 months from the activation of their license to bolster their own knowledge.

Andy Lang, Environmental Response Manager for Petrofac Training Services, said: “Our new offering now complements Petrofac’s existing suite of accredited oil spill training courses including DECC Level 2 and 3. We worked in partnership with Oilennium and OIMs to develop this comprehensive new course. A key feature is the state of the art animation and highly visual approach which ensures the information is engaging for those who may one day find themselves in an oil spill situation. We’re delighted to be able to bring this service to market and look forward to supporting our customers further with their specific training needs.”
