Environmental protection in China

Oilfield Technology,

The proportion of investment in environmental protection remains low in Chinese GDP, however the amount has kept increasing in recent years and is expected to grow significantly this year. In China, fog and haze remain the serious problems, yet the indicies of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen decline in waste gas treatment is apparent. The sewage treatment industry is expected to enjoy development opportunities this year, based on industrial features and policy focuses.

In recent years, the Chinese government has issued a series of policies to support the development of the environmental protection industry and the industry of energy conservation and environmental protection is expected to do nothing but grow between 2014 and 2018 due to the implementation of new policies.

Waste gas treatment

For the last few years, waste gas treatment policies have begun to have an impact. The discharge of sulfur dioxide was 21.18 million t in 2012 but this has dropped 4.2% year on year. However, despite the drop, the figure is still twice that of the environment capacity expected and far higher than the US and 27 European Union countries which are 10.36 million t and 5.68 million t respectively. Nitrogen oxides have also declined from 24. 04 million t in 2011 by 2.77% to 23.38 million t, 70.93% of these emissions come from industry and 27.38 from vehicles.

Air pollution

On 13 September 2013, the state Council of China issued the Plan of Air Pollution Treatment and the Ministry of Environmental Protection signed the Letter of Responsibility for Air Pollution Prevention and Control with six local governments. The Ministry of Finance has also invested CNY 5 billion in supporting air pollution treatment in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and surrounding areas. Implementation rules have been issued by local governments with the Key Missions of Clean Air Action Plan in Beijing being key between 2013 and 2017.

The new policies on air pollution treatment provide financial support and reinforce punishment for illegal actions. The fields related to waste gas treatment will also benefit from the clean air policies.
