Ramboll awarded additional Culzean jacket design projects

Oilfield Technology,

Maersk Oil UK has awarded Ramboll Oil & Gas the detailed design for the two jackets for a central processing facility platform and a separate utilities and living quarter platform for the Culzean field offshore Aberdeen.

The projects are awarded following Ramboll's successful completion of the Culzean wellhead jacket detailed design late 2014, which marked Ramboll's first major involvement in Maersk Oil's Culzean field.

Supporting energy security in the UK

Culzean is an ultra-high-pressure, high-temperature field located around 242 km (145 miles) east of Aberdeen in the UK sector of the Central North Sea. Apart from being a key growth project for Maersk Oil, the field also has the potential to significantly support employment and energy security in the UK. The field is said to potentially deliver up to 5% of the UK's gas consumption by 2020/21.

The new facilities are expected to not only support production of the Culzean discovery, but also serve as a hub for a new development cluster in the surrounding area.

Ramboll's scope of work comprises the detailed design of the jackets for the central processing facility platform and the utilities and living quarter platform and associated piles for water depth of 90 m (296 ft). These jackets will be the largest substructures designed by Ramboll for the North Sea.

Cementing Ramboll's entrance to the UK market

“The Culzean wellhead jacket design which we finalised in 2014 was our chance to showcase our jacket and steel design capabilities in the UK. I am very proud that our success with the first Culzean project has now paved the way for the award of the two subsequent projects," says Department Director, Jackets, Ramboll Oil & Gas, Bjørn V. Jønsson.

He continues: "To be chosen in international competition the first time was a major breakthrough but to be chosen as the preferred provider to the subsequent jobs is the best recognition you can get."

Tim Martin, Aberdeen-based Managing Director of Ramboll Oil and Gas UK, says the contract win represents a major success for the company just six months after it established a presence in the Granite City.

He adds, “The contract award proves the capabilities of the team, which has extensive experience in delivering multi-disciplinary engineering projects such as this.

“Through our network of international offices we are able to offer global expertise with a local presence here in Aberdeen, and this is a very appealing combination for companies operating in the UKCS.”
