Fotech Solutions will be publishing world-first research findings that demonstrates the viability of distributed acoustic sensor (DAS) technology as a pipeline leak detection monitoring tool. The research will be presented for the first time at the International Pipeline Conference (IPC) 2018 in Calgary, Canada.
Historically, pipeline leak detection monitoring has been achieved with the aid of a number of technologies, such as mass balance systems or acoustic pressure wave monitoring systems. While DAS has received interest as an alternative for leak detection monitoring, to date the only studies into its potential have been conducted in controlled laboratory-based environments.
In order to demonstrate DAS’ full potential, Fotech conducted extensive real-world testing of DAS technology, focused on leak simulations con-ducted in an actual pipeline environment and in direct comparison to existing technologies. This testing demonstrated DAS’ efficacy as a pipeline leak detection monitoring technology, with a number of key benefits standing-out when compared to conventional solutions.
