Australian player Santos has announced a new gas discovery offshore Bangladesh with 20 m of good quality gas play. However, full volume and flow assessments have yet to be completed.
Once the well is completed it will be connected to the nearby Sangu Facilities and will provide gas to Chittagong in the months following the completion of marketing arrangements.
The well that made the most recent discovery, Sangu-11 is the third of a three well drilling programme. The first and second wells were both abandoned after a combination of geological issues and failure to encounter commercial levels of hydrocarbons.
The President of Santos in Bangladesh, John Chambers released the following statement: “We are pleased to have found new volumes of gas that can supply the Chittagong market. Further gas discoveries will still be needed to supply the market in the medium to long term. The mixed success of this programme is a reminder of the risks and challenges associated with gas exploration and appraisal, and underlines the importance of providing the right investment framework to encourage further exploration in the Bay of Bengal.”
