Cyviz installs new control room on Neptune Energy’s Gjøa platform

Neptune Energy, an independent oil and gas exploration company, has worked with Cyviz to complete an upgrade project to core functions within the offshore control room of its Gjøa platform, located in the North Sea. Cyviz, which designs and delivers physical collaboration spaces and smart meeting rooms for the digital workforce, designed and installed a sophisticated turnkey solution for the Gjøa platform control room without disruption to operations. The new control room has improved collaboration, user experience and the management of operations for Gjøa platform control room operators.
Operations of the Gjøa platform, including safety, automation, wells and oil and gas production, are monitored from the control room. Cyviz’ solution consists of the design, delivery and installation of the necessary equipment required to improve operations on the platform.
User experience is critical in control rooms
Neptune Energy’s control room operators require ongoing and instant access to mission-critical information from many sources on the Gjøa platform. The ergonomic solution that Cyviz designed and installed provides control room operators with a modern and improved collaboration space. It includes six projectors that project a seamless, high-quality visual image onto a screen, which provides operators with an overview of the platform’s operations. The new configuration is easy-to-use and the image quality is better, which is important if you consider that staff often work 12 hr shifts.
Cyviz’ solution is energy efficient and produces less heat than its predecessor. The projectors that are installed are whisper-quiet and emit a noise level comparable to that of a recording studio. In addition, there is less heat dissipation in the new solution, meaning that heating, ventilation and air conditioning can be effectively managed within the control room, which creates a positive working environment.
Cyviz Marketing Director, Marie Pettersson said, “The main challenge of the Neptune Energy implementation was to complete the upgrade of the ‘heart and brain’ of the control room without disrupting operations, which we achieved. Our collaboration and visualisation solutions enable our customers to work together seamlessly and efficiently. These benefits are essential in a dynamic operation scenario, such as an oil and gas platform.”
Cost savings during installation
The installation of the new control room has been cost-effective, because no interruptions occurred to the operations during installation. Further, as the projectors installed are light (17 kg), and below the 25 kg offshore limit, it meant lifting equipment was not required during installation, which made the installation less resource-intensive.
Future-proofing the control room
Cyviz’ solution is expected to serve the platform beyond the next 10 years. It comes with superior servicing and maintenance options, which include remote support and equipment monitoring. These benefits reduce the need for a technician to travel to the platform to make repairs, saving the cost of expensive helicopter tickets and offshore accommodation. Additionally, Cyviz’ solution is not expected to require replacement parts for up to five years, and the components are built and selected to enable a stable operation 24/7.
