The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Aberdeen Section has announced the winners of its student bursaries programme for 2014-2015.

£12 500 has been awarded to 13 students as part of the Section’s annual student bursaries fund.

Three bursaries of £2500 and ten bursaries of £500 were awarded to students attending Aberdeen, Robert Gordon, Dundee and Heriot-Watt universities. The funding was awarded to those studying a degree relevant to the oil and gas industry, at an under-graduate, post-graduate or PhD level. Students were required to demonstrate an intention of working in the oil and gas industry on completion of their studies, as well as academic merit and active involvement in the SPE.

The following students were awarded with the £2500 bursary awards:

  • Panday Gangaram, LLM Mineral Law and Policy at University of Dundee.
  • Haikrishnan Radhakrishnan, MSc Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt University.
  • Ross Grant, PhD Applied Geoscience at Heriot-Watt University.

Ten other students were awarded a bursary of £500 to help them with their studies. All of the students will receive their bursaries at a presentation held at the next SPE Aberdeen Section meeting on 25 February, 2015.

SPE Aberdeen chairman Ross Lowdon said: “The oil and gas industry has suffered some turbulent times in recent months, however it is critical that we continue to support young people looking to enter this industry as these troublesome times will not last forever.

“Whilst cuts to budgets, projects and people are being made on almost a daily basis at the moment, SPE Aberdeen’s commitment to encouraging and supporting the future workforce remains constant. We look forward to seeing how our bursary awards help this year’s worthy recipients progress into successful careers in the oil and gas industry.”

SPE Aberdeen’s Student Development Committee, which is responsible for awarding the annual bursaries, consists of industry professionals, representatives of SPE Aberdeen student chapters and academic sponsors. The committee provides opportunities for Scottish university students to enhance their technical knowledge and professional competence through industry events and specialised conferences, as well as more informal meetings.
