ADC Virtual Academy has announced its acclaimed online training is to be incorporated into the University of Aberdeen Masters of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering curriculum.

The customised award ‘Understanding Rig Inspection’, which has a commercial value of more than £200,000, is the first of its kind to be certified and quality assured by the Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) and is being gifted by ADC to the university. It will account for 10% of the overall assessment grade of the Well and Production Engineering module of the MSc programme.

ADC’s International Well Control Forum (IWCF) Drilling Well Control Level two course will also be included within the qualification as well as the complete library of ADC Virtual Academy webisodes.

Lateef Akanji, senior lecturer and Petroleum Engineering MSc programme coordinator at the University of Aberdeen, commented: “The advantages of ADC’s course to our current syllabus is significant. Due to the course being authored and influenced by their parent company’s core activities, it means the course structure and content is arguably the most relevant and authentic learning resource available.”

“With the addition of the IWCF’s Drilling Well Control Level 2 course, it allows our students to enter the industry with a distinct edge recognised and sought after by employers worldwide.”

Created by highly-experienced oilfield engineers, the course features real inspection video footage and cutting edge animation. Students will gain an appreciation of the importance of regular inspection and maintenance schedules, its impact on safety and production, increased knowledge of regulatory standards as well as gaining a comprehensive understanding of the major equipment on a rig.

Austin Hay, Director, ADC commented: “Because ADC is firmly committed to training the next generation of engineers we are delighted to gift our extensive online training to students of the University of Aberdeen. Bringing a real-life working environment into the classroom, our unique learning equips students with a valuable virtual rig experience, an advantage which can’t be offered anywhere else.”

“We are still facing a challenging environment in Aberdeen but training and nurturing the young workforce should still be a top priority for the oil and gas industry.”

The ‘Understanding Rig Inspection’ customised award is part of ADC’s Virtual Academy which is an online training environment for the oil and gas industry, providing more than 80 specific training modules within five dedicated subject areas.
