GE has awarded NRG Energy’s Seward Power Station in New Florence, Pennsylvania, with its prestigious ecomagination Leadership Award for the plant’s significant improvement in water treatment reduction in costs with the aid of GE and its advanced water chemical technology.
The 525 MW coal fired plant had previously looked to GE for assistance in optimising the performance of its clarifier, which removes suspended solids from the water used for power generation and in the cooling tower. GE participated in a 6 year effort, including chemical and operational changes and mechanical upgrades, in order to help Seward meet its goals.
As a result, the Seward Power Plant experienced a 25% reduction in its total water treatment costs per million gal and a 100 million gal annual reduction in blow down water from the cooling tower. In addition, the reduction of manganese was greater than 90% consistently.
Since 2008, the Seward Power Station has achieved more than US$ 500 000 in cumulative savings.
Plant Manager, Greg Mitchell, has described the benefits of the partnership in improvement; including improved water quality, saved money and positive environmental impact. Plant management recognised an opportunity for improvement and turned to GE for help meeting its goals. Based upon technical expertise and practical experience gained from the field, GE and the team at Seward Power Station identified several mechanical issues that could be modified.
During plant outages over the next several years, the plant made many revisions to the clarifier. In addition, GE conducted an operational excellence survey during this time to optimise the clarifier and cooling tower operation.
GE has now awarded Seward with the ecomagination Leadership Award in recognition of the company’s noteworthy reductions in water usage and discharge; the plant now significantly surpasses environmental and industrial operational goals.
