Newpark releases liner-less spill containment system

Oil and gas operators can minimise cost of operation with the rigorously tested DEFENDER™ liner-less spill containment system from Newpark Mats and Integrated Services (NMIS). The system offers two levels of protection against spills and leaks with its innovative DX4 Sealing Technology. Featuring redundant seals integrated into the overlapping and interlocking lips of the company’s DURA-BASE® mats, the system reduces and in some cases completely eliminates the need for liners. Up to US$1 million in insurance coverage for environmental clean-up is also available to qualifying customers.

The Defender reduces the total cost of operations (TCO) by minimising the risks associated with liner use, such as rips and tears that result in added maintenance and repair costs. In addition, it also reduces or completely eliminates the costs associated with liner installation and removal, including trucking and proper disposal expenses.

“The DEFENDER is a more efficient method to achieve total site containment for the oil and gas industry,” said Jeff Juergens, President of Newpark Mats and Integrated Services. “The system offers double protection and reduces the hassles that typically accompany liner use. Our confidence in DEFENDER as an effective ground protection solution is reflected in the million dollar insurance policy available to customers.”

The DEFENDER system also features a proprietary cellar protection component which fully integrates with the redundant DX4 Sealing Technology. This specialised component offers a third layer of protection at the most critical region where spills are most likely to occur: the cellar. In addition, wall berms and drive-over berms improve work site safety by easing access to the work platform, and minimise the environmental impact to surrounding areas with additional splash protection. The berms connect directly to the sealed matting system.

Site installation is also simplified with the use of Newpark’s custom-designed grappling truck, ensuring optimum seal-to-seal contact while facilitating rigorous quality control. This installation method further reduces costs and enhances safety by minimising impact to the surrounding environment while requiring fewer personnel for setup.

“We designed the DEFENDER system to provide operators with a worksite that is more secure, maximises efficiency and offers simplicity in mat installation and removal,” said Juergens. “It required years of research and development, a great deal of engineering skill and extensive field trials to bring the system to market, but the end result is a simplified spill containment solution that will help operators complete jobs more quickly and effectively than ever before.”
