South Hook terminal completed
The second part of the South Hook terminal has now been completed, effectively doubling the amount of gas it can deliver to the UK gas grid to 21 billion m3.
The first two storage tanks, which are both the size of London’s Albert Hall were brought into service a year ago, and with the addition of the three new tanks and the extra equipment, the terminal should be capable of processing up to 15.6 million tpa of LNG. The facility is Europe’s largest LNG terminal.
Qatargas’ CEO Faisal Al-Suwaidi said, “South Hook as part of Qatargas 2 project, is groundbreaking in terms of size, organisation, finance and its strategic importance.”
The processing terminal is a joint venture between Qatargas, ExxonMobil and Total. The owners have predicted that the new project could inject up to £1 billion into the local economy, and in the long term the increased LNG importing capacity will compensate for the dwindling North Sea resources.
