Energy Institute updates hazardous zone guidance

On 16 July 2015, the Energy Institute (EI) will hold a seminar in Manchester to present the updated Model code of safe practice Part 15: Area classification code for installations handling flammable fluids (EI15).

The EI15 publication is a well-established piece of process safety guidance, used globally across all industry sectors handling flammable fluids. The code presents a pragmatic and flexible approach for hazardous area classifications. It is referenced in the UK Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations approved code of practice, L138, as a key guidance document for the effective management of the risks associated with the potential ignition of flammable fluids.

The EI’s Area Classification Working Group (ACWG), chaired by Howard Crowther, Consultant, is responsible for the development of the technical content of this guidance. Kieran Glynn, Advisor – Major Accident Risk Group S&OR, BP, is Vice Chair of the ACWG and will be speaking at this forthcoming event.

Mr Glynn, Vice Chair, ACWG, says, ‘Area classification is a key process used to reduce the likelihood of injury or damage caused by ignition of releases of flammable fluids. In recognition of the importance of area classification to industry, the EI, through the ACWG, constantly strives to improve the technical quality and clarity of its guidance. This fourth edition of EI15 incorporates a number of EI funded research projects and more than 500 industry stakeholder comments. The event next month provides a unique opportunity to hear from and meet the scientists and engineers who have contributed to this updated guidance.’

The seminar will present the key changes between the third edition and this latest revision, examine how the guidance fits alongside existing regulation and other guidelines, as well as cover the effect of ventilation in enclosed areas and the new references to liquefied natural gas.
