Nexans exhibiting upstream technologies at OTC 2018

Oilfield Technology,

Nexans is at OTC 2018 to show how its range of subsea, drilling and topside connection technologies continues to evolve as projects become more demanding, tiebacks become longer and the power demands on cables increase as processing of oil and gas is increasingly moved to subsea facilities.

Nexans’ subsea offering includes umbilicals, direct electrical heating (DEH) and power cables. Nexans’ drilling and topside offering includes GEXOL® & SHIPLINK® power, control and instrumentation cables, cable assemblies offshore as well as land unitised service loops Amerlink and custom-engineered offshore bridles.

Umbilicals for longer tiebacks

Nexans’ umbilicals are used in many applications such as interconnecting subsea installations, connecting subsea installations to fixed and floating platforms and FPSOs, as well as connecting subsea systems to shore. Nexans introduced the first steel tube umbilical in 1993 and the first dynamic steel tube umbilical in 1995. Since then, it has supplied around 3500 km of umbilicals worldwide. Nexans has pushed the technology envelope to realise complex power umbilicals, which combine high voltage cables with the functions traditionally provided by electro/hydraulic umbilicals. Nexans is now expanding its manufacturing capabilities and global footprint to target all umbilical requirements from small to the very large umbilicals required to meet the growing industry trend for longer tiebacks to existing platforms, with a major emphasis on lowering overall field development costs.

DEH for flow assurance

Direct electrical heating (DEH) is a field-proven flow assurance technology developed to safeguard the well stream through the pipeline to the platform. Nexans has delivered 13 projects for 30 flowlines with the supply of more than 400 km of cable.

Power cables meet increased consumption in deeper waters

Nexans is building on its experience and R&D capabilities in the field of high-voltage (HV) submarine power cables to serve the needs of the offshore industry for increased power consumption in deeper waters at longer offsets. This advanced HV power cable technology is also finding new applications in powering offshore platforms from the onshore grid and exporting power from offshore wind farms, including both dynamic and static cables. Recent developments include a novel 320 kV extruded cable that is being deployed as the power export cables for the DolWin 6 offshore wind farm in the German North Sea. Nexans is also developing a 145 kV dry type cable design for dynamic applications.

Expanding the Nexans cable ship fleet

Nexans is committed to expanding its manufacturing base to target expanded geographical markets, as well as developing new products that address the changing needs of the offshore industry as it moves into more challenging locations and deeper waters. In addition to new products, Nexans is expanding its fleet of cable ships by commissioning a new purpose-built vessel with a 10 000-t capacity turntable and the capability to perform complex installation operations on flexible products in shallow to deep water.

Topside cables

Nexans offers topside Type P and IEC NEK 606 cable connectivity solutions, bringing power and control to some of the biggest offshore platforms in the world. Nexans’ GEXOL® insulated Type P cables are the industry standard for reliable, flexible and durable power, control and instrumentation cables. GEXOL® VFD cables are specially designed for high-vibration environments and offer outstanding dielectric properties, which make them ideal for variable frequency drive applications. Nexans SHIPLINK® NEK 606 cables deliver reliable, high-performance service to IEC-spec offshore platforms and FPSOs throughout the world.

Offshore bridles / over water umbilicals

Nexans is highly experienced in the design and manufacture of offshore bridle and overwater umbilical connectivity projects. Each system presents unique engineering challenges that require experienced and innovative thinking to deliver a connection solution that provides reliable, efficient service in extremely harsh, dynamic operating environments. Types include 5/8/15kV assemblies, tender-to-platform bridles, ship-to-shore power, portable power generation and Zone 1 (EX) rated cable assemblies.

Top drive service loops

Nexans produces service loops for the Offshore and Land Drilling Industry at its systems facility in Houston, Texas. These loops are designed for durable, reliable performance in harsh offshore platform environments. Nexans offers standard or custom designs to meet the operator’s specifications, including extreme deep water drilling ship loop packages. AmerLink jacketed top drive service loops offer a significant design improvement over traditional hose-encased designs. AmerLink’s innovative construction elements work independently and collectively to support the weight and dynamic loads experienced in land drilling operations. This next-generation, patented technology offers operators longer service life and more productive drilling through a reduction in downtime.
