One of Kazakhstan’s leading academic institutions, Nazarbayev University, is investing in a new state-of-the-art drilling and well control simulator training facility to support the oil and gas industry across the region.

The facility will include several interactive real time drilling and well control simulators by advanced simulator developer, Drilling Systems, part of the 3T Energy Group.

Drilling Systems’ technology provides an immersive learning experience which dramatically enhances understanding of drilling and well control operations and increases graduates’ practical skills.

The technology will be used to support the newly-launched Nazarbayev University Petroleum Engineering undergraduate and post graduate programmes.

Gani Nessipbekov, executive director of Nazarbayev University School of Mining and Geosciences, said: “We are fully committed to ensuring the oil and gas industry in Kazakhstan and further afield has a highly skilled, competent and safe workforce. This significant investment in a brand-new simulator training facility demonstrates our commitment to the industry and will help to position Kazakhstan as a leader in the training and education of Petroleum Engineers across the world.”

Clive Battisby, chief operating officer at Drilling Systems, said: “We are delighted to be working closely with Nazarbayev University on its new state-of-the-art simulator training facility. In high-risk sectors, like oil and gas exploration, the consequences of human error or equipment malfunction can be catastrophic and simulators help prepare workers for the field like nothing else.

“Our simulators allow students to experience all the sights, sounds and behaviours of operations of a real rig. Students will have the opportunity to practise routine operations and specific emergency scenarios in a risk-free setting. This means that when they do start work in-the-field they are confident and comfortable with whatever task faces them.”
