Petrofac awards contract to CNIM

Oilfield Technology,

CNIM has been awarded by Petrofac, a leading international service provider to the oil and gas industry, a contract to design, build and commission an innovative highly energy efficient and environmentally friendly cooling system consisting of two custom-made absorption chillers. This system will be installed aboard Petrofac’s new JSD6000 deepwater derrick lay vessel that will be available in 2017.

For the first time in industry, absorption chillers will be used aboard an offshore vessel to cool process equipment.

By using the waste heat from the ship’s engines, CNIM Absorption Chillers will produce cold power with no impact on fuel consumption and emissions, bringing a real advantage compared to traditional compression chillers, which require a considerable amount of extra fuel to operate. Moreover, CNIM Absorption Chillers will require no toxic refrigerants and no CFCs, unlike traditional compression technology.

“CNIM is proud to be working with Petrofac on such an innovative project. It will be a landmark event for the offshore and maritime industry”, explains Philippe Demigné, member of CNIM’s Management Board.

“CNIM Absorption Chillers will contribute to delivering the greenest and most environmentally friendly vessel of its category”, added Yves Inbona, Managing Director for Petrofac’s Offshore Capital Projects business.

CNIM Absorption Chillers are the result of the takeover of the absorption chiller and heat pump business of the German engineering company INVEN Absorption GmbH, which has been developing and installing absorption machines throughout the world over the last 20 years.

By combining INVEN’s technology and CNIM’s outstanding production facility capabilities, CNIM Absorption Chillers target the energy efficiency market in the Oil & Gas, petrochemical, chemical, energy production and shipbuilding industries.

This turnkey offering, which includes the design and manufacture of the equipment as well as all maintenance services, complements offers by CNIM’s other various entities and subsidiaries specialised in waste-to-energy and biomass-to-energy conversion, flue-gas treatment, refurbishment of thermal power plants and industrial boiler houses.
