Tyco is currently the only provider of multiple addressable SIL2 Compliant, end-to-end fire detection and gas loop configurations as standard. In meeting the International Electro-technical Commission’s IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 Standards, Tyco also provides customers in the Marine, Oil and Gas sectors with additional support when it comes to creating the required Safety Analysis Report.

The IEC 61508 Standard categorises SIL (Safety Integrity Level) into hardware safety and systematic integrity safety however a device, sub-system or system must meet the requirements for both categories to achieve the required SIL. The IEC 61511 Standard sets out practices in the engineering of systems to ensure the safety of an industrial process throughout its lifecycle from Front End Engineering Design (FEED) to De-Commissioning.

Resilience

When it comes to the reliability and resilience of fire and gas systems, manufacturers should provide the necessary documentation to prove the level of SIL compliance and its verification and assessment by an independent certification body. Tyco is able to provide multiple loop configurations for addressable fire detection systems where the solution and devices are to be certified to meet the Functional Safety requirements of SIL2. A Safety Analysis Report (SAR) then determines failure rates.

Although customers must create their own SAR for the overall system, crucially Tyco is able to produce a standard SAR for the variety of configurations possible across its addressable detection range. These can be adapted and help to make the process of producing the overall Safety System SAR more efficient.

Furthermore, Tyco’s addressable fire detection system has the ability to be integrated with a wide variety of third party systems through both simplex and dual communication links (e.g. VMS/IAS/DCS/SCADA/ESD) utilising various communication protocols.

“Although not a legislative requirement, SIL certification is good engineering practice and a pre-requisite for our Marine and Oil and Gas customers,” explained Simon Rooks from Tyco.

Asset integrity

“We are proud that our addressable fire detection range meets the requirements of both the IE 61508 and IEC61511, standards confirming its compliance with SIL2. At Tyco we offer a market leading range of compliant fire and gas field devices – as well as the specialist capability to provide complete life safety and asset integrity throughout the lifecycle of a new or upgraded installation.”

Tyco’s Detection & Control Solutions are typically application driven allowing the company to offer customers the ultimate in system diversity and flexibility. Every project undertaken is unique and Tyco assesses each system before deciding upon the best technical and engineering solution.
