AWE Limited spuds exploration well in Perth Basin, WA

Oilfield Technology,

Sydney-headquartered AWE Limited and Titan Energy Limited have confirmed that the Drover-1 exploration well in the Perth Basin, Western Australia, commenced drilling at 21:30 (AWST) on Sunday 29 June 2014.

As at 06:00 hours AWST today, the well was at a measured depth of 141 m and was drilling in a 12 ¼ in. hole to a planned depth of 900 m in preparation for the installation of the 9 5/8 inch surface casing.

The Drover-1 exploration well is located on pastoral land in the Shire of Coorow, approximately 18 km southeast of Green Head and 220 km north of Perth.

Testing of unconventional gas potential in the Perth Basin

The Drover-1 exploration well will be drilled vertically to a planned total depth of 2400 m and is forecast to take approximately four weeks to complete. The well is designed to test the unconventional gas potential in the southern area of AWE’s Perth Basin acreage and is targeting the Kockatea and Carynginia shale formations, the Irwin River Coal Measures and the High Cliff Sandstones. Core samples will be collected and sent for analysis before determining the next phase of activity.

Despite some production delays from its operations in the Perth Basin, AWE remains on track to drill two to four unconventional gas wells in the onshore Perth Basin in 2014.
