Topical luncheons at SPE Offshore Europe 2013 announced

Oilfield Technology,

Three varied and relevant topical luncheons are planned during SPE Offshore Europe 2013. Places must be booked for each of these events, which form part of Europe’s largest oil and gas industry conference and exhibition, taking place in Aberdeen from 3 - 6 September.

Role of IOCs and NOCs

The topic for the first luncheon on Tuesday 3rd September is the role of the independent, international oil company (IOC) and national oil company (NOC) over the next 50 years. As the world becomes more prosperous, it is placing ever-greater strains on the supply of energy, water and other resources. The challenge for IOCs, NOCs and independent oil and gas companies is how to meet increasing energy demands while at the same time balancing the need for reducing CO2 emissions, being smarter in the use of energy, aggressively pursuing technological innovations, and meeting society’s expectations.

Chaired by John Humphrys, author, journalist and presenter of radio and television, luncheon speakers include Andy Brown, Upstream International Director, Shell; Paul Warwick, EVP Europe-Atlantic, Talisman; and Peter Jones, Managing Director UK, TAQA Bratani. The speakers will share insights on their respective roles in meeting the changes and challenges presented by an evolving energy landscape.

Encouraging more female engineers

Women in industry is the theme of the luncheon on Wednesday 4th September. The objective of the luncheon is to raise the profile of engineering and the oil industry as an appropriate and attractive place for women to work. The speakers will explore what can be done to encourage more women to go into engineering and the oil and gas industry and to help to reverse the trend of the UK’s especially low proportion of female engineers. It is aimed at anyone in a position of influence in recruitment or line management.

Speakers at the luncheon include Stephanie Cox, Vice President HR, Schlumberger; Fergus Ewing, MSP, Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism in Scotland; and Oonagh Werngren, Operations Director, Oil & Gas UK. The Princess Royal, Royal Patron, WISE, will be in attendance.

The future of the energy markets

The topic moves to energy markets – the short and long term – for the luncheon on Thursday 5th September. The speaker Christof Ruehl is Group Chief Economist and Vice President of BP. He manages BP’s global Economics Team, providing economic input into the company’s commercial decisions. BP’s Economics Team also produces the annual ‘Statistical Review of World Energy and Global Energy Outlook’.

A social networking opportunity

Malcolm Webb, Chairman of Offshore Europe 2013 and CEO of Oil & Gas UK commented: “These luncheons add real value to the conference programme. They allow delegates to engage on topics of central relevance to our future whilst at the same time networking with colleagues from all parts of the industry. Places for each of these sessions are limited and selling fast, so I advise you book early to avoid disappointment.”
