Wintershall hits oil at Hibonite

Oilfield Technology,

Wintershall, a unit of BASF, has made an oil discovery offshore Denmark that is estimated to contain approximately 100 million bbls of oil, according to a statement released by the company. The well, which probes the Hibonite structure, is situated some 278 km west of the Danish port of Esbjerg.

The well drilled to a total depth of 4431 m in water 52 m deep lies only a few kilometres from the Ravn discovery, which was appraised in 2009. It has been suggested that the proximity with the Ravn discovery could lead to a ‘cluster development approach.’

At present, Wintershall has no oil or gas production offshore Denmark. The company operates in the Norwegian, UK, German and Danish North Sea zones.
