New fields to see Ghana’s oil output to at least double by 2021

Oilfield Technology,

The West African nation of Ghana has announced that it expects its total oil output to have more than doubled by 2021, bringing production up to 250 000 bpd.

According to Nana Boakye Asafu-Adjaye, CEO of Ghana National Petroleum Corp. (GNPC), the country is in the lucky position of having several new crude oil discoveries in various stages of development. Tullow Oil’s Jubilee field, located some 60 km offshore, has produced an average of 110 000 bpd in recent months.

Asafu-Adjaye said that the government will be investing US$ 20 billion over the next five to eight years in order to develop the Jubilee field and other discoveries. These other discoveries include the TEN group, which is comprised of the Tweneboa, Enyenra, and Ntomme deep water fields, and are believed to hold a total of 300 - 500 million bpd with an predicted initial production rate of 76 000 bpd.

Jubilee reaching production plateau

In order to meet its target of doubling overall oil production, Ghana will be heavily reliant on these new fields as the Jubilee field (the country's only producing field) is reaching its estimated production plateau of 120 000 bpd. The field has produced approximately 62 million bbls over its lifetime and has reserve estimates of up to 1 billion bbls.

As well as oil, Ghana has hopes to produce 140 million ft3 of natural gas from the field for use in power generation and export to neighbouring countries.
