Total has acquired a 40% interest in five offshore exploration blocks in Kenya. The company has acquired stakes in blocks L4, L7, L11a, L11b and L12 in the Lamu basin.

Total has acquired stakes from Anadarko Kenya Company, Cove Energy and Dynamic Global Advisors.

The exploration blocks cover an area of more than 30,500 km2 in depths of between 100 – 3000m. Currently a 3D survey covering 3500 km2 is underway and one or more exploratory wells will be drilled based on the results.

“This transaction is part of a bold exploration strategy that consists in acquiring large stakes in high-potential frontier plays,” says Marc Blaizot, Total’s Senior Vice President, Exploration. “Recent discoveries in offshore Mozambique and Tanzania offer a very promising outlook for these Kenyan permits.”
