Johan Sverdrup field could be slightly larger than predicted
Results from a new appraisal well in the Johan Sverdrup field have raised the possibility that the field could extend into a third licensing block. The field is already Norway’s largest discovery for many years, and has previously been estimated to contain approximately 3.3 billion bbls of oil.
According to a statement released by Statoil and its partner, Det Norske, the new well reveals “a small additional upside to the field’s resources.” Neither of the two companies have confirmed the precise volumes involved, but according to analysts, the actual figure is likely to represent a 2 – 3% increase to the field’s overall capacity.
Despite the positive news, the fact that the field extends into a third license area, with a different owner, could complicate the extraction of these additional reserves, as new stakes would have to be agreed upon.
