Benefits of oil and gas to US states: A - F

Oil and natural gas are giving a major boost to the US economy at the moment and this is rippling across the entire country. The American Petroleum Institute has released results of a survey highlighting how each US state is benefitting economically from this industry boom. Below are findings for US states from A – F.

Alabama

• At least 101 businesses, spread across the state’s seven congressional districts, are part of the largest oil and natural gas supply chain.
• The oil and gas industry in Alabama supports 103 300 jobs, 4.2% of the state’s total employment.
• Labour income in the state supported by the oil and gas sector is US$ 4.9 billion /y.
• Annual salary across all industries is US$ 41 399 /y. In oil and gas (excluding gas stations) annual salary is US$ 63 832 /y.
• The industry overall supports US$ 11.3 billion of the Alabama economy, 6.4% of the state’s total economic activity.
• By 2035 hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling are expected to support 18 615 jobs in the state.
• 77% of registered voters in the state support increased oil and gas production in the US.

Alaska

• At least 505 businesses, spread across Alaska’s congressional district are part of the larger oil and natural gas supply chain.
• The industry supports 56 600 jobs in Alaska, 11.9% of the state’s total employment.
• The total labour income supported by oil and gas is US$ 4.5 billion /y, the equivalent of 12.6% of the state’s total.
• The average wage across all industries in Alaska is US$ 50 624 /y. In oil and gas (excluding gas stations) it is US$ 125 794 /y.
• The industry overall supports US$ 19.3 billion of the state’s economy.
• Alaska is the US’s 4th highest oil producer and 11th highest natural gas producer.

Arizona

• 124 businesses, across all nine of Arizona’s congressional districts are part of the largest oil and natural gas supply chain.
• The oil and gas industry supports 97 100 jobs or 3% of the state’s total employment.
• Labour income supported by the industry is US$ 4/65 billion /y.
• Average salary across the state is US$ 45 425 with oil and gas salaries averaging US$ 56 822 /y (excluding gas stations).
• Over all the industry supports US$ 9 billion of Arizona’s economy.
• Hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling are expected to support 26 340 jobs by 2035.

Arkansas

• 225 businesses, at least, are supported across all four congressional districts of Arkansas by the largest oil and gas supply chain.
• The industry supports 92 500 jobs the equivalent of 5.9% of the state’s total employment.
• Labour income supported by oil and gas totals US$ 4.22 billion /y.
• Average state salary across the state is US$ 38 623 /y with oil and gas salaries totalling US$ 67 962 /y on average (all totals exclude gas stations).
• Overall the oil and gas industry supports US$ 8 billion of the state’s economy.
• Arkansas is the 18th top oil producer in the US and the 8th top natural gas producer.

California

• 1980 businesses across all 52 of California’s congressional districts are part of the larger oil and gas sector.
• The industry supports 793 200 jobs across the state, the equivalent of 4.1% of total employment.
• Total state labour income supported by the industry is US$ 58.9 billion /y.
• Average annual salary across all sectors is US$ 56 590, and US$ 120 802 /y in the oil and gas sector.
• The industry supports US$ 131.4 billion of the state’s economy.
• California is the 3rd biggest oil producer in the US and 13th natural gas producer.

Colorado

• 1198 businesses, across the state’s seven congressional districts, are part of the larger oil and gas supply chain.
• 213 100 jobs or 6.7% of Colorado’s labour is supported by oil and gas.
• Labour income supported by the oil and gas sector is US$ 14.1 billion /y or 8.1% of the total labour income.
• Average yearly salary across industry is US$ 51 124 and US$ 105 025 /y in oil and gas.
• Overall, the industry supports US$ 25/8 billion of the state’s economy.
• Colorado is the 9th biggest oil producer and 6th biggest natural gas producer in the USA.

Connecticut

• 73 businesses, spread across all five of the state’s congressional districts, are part of the largest oil and natural gas supply chain.
• 59 400 jobs are supported by the oil and gas sector, equivalent to 2.7% of total employment.
• US$ 4.2 billion /y of labour income is supported by the industry.
• The average industry salary is US$ 63 169 /y or US$ 72 017 /y in the oil and gas sector.
• Overall the industry supports US$ 7.68 billion of the Connecticut economy.
• By 2035, horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing are expected to support 14 119 jobs in the state.

Delaware

• 22 businesses across the state are part of the larger oil and gas supply chain.
• 3% of the state’s total employment, or 16 100 jobs are supported by the industry.
• Oil and gas labour income totals US$ 957 million /y.
• The average industry salary in the state is US$ 52 026 /y or US$ 77 876 /y in the oil and gas sector.
• The sector supports US$ 2 billion Delaware’s economy.

District of Colombia

• At least 49 businesses in Washington DC are part of the larger oil and gas supply chain.
• 1.7% of the state’s total employment, or 13 700 jobs are supported by the oil and gas sector.
• Labour income supported by the industry totals US$ 1 .4 billion /y.

Florida

• 183 businesses across Florida’s 27 congressional districts are part of the larger oil and gas supply chain.
• 286 800 jobs in the state are supported by the sector, equivalent to 2.9% of the state’s total employment.
• The industry supports labour income to the tune of US$ 12.9 billion /y.
• Average annual salaries in Florida are US$ 42 896 /y or US$ 64 463 /y in the oil and gas sector.
• Over all, oil and gas supports US$ 23.2 billion of the state’s economy.
• By 2035, horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracking are expected to support 79 499 jobs in Florida.
