Greenpeace activists climb London’s shard in protest against Arctic drilling

Oilfield Technology,

Six protesters affiliated with Greenpeace have launched an illegal attempt to climb London’s Shard skyscraper, the tallest building in Western Europe, as a protest against oil and gas drilling in the Arctic. The Shard was apparently chosen because of its design, which is meant to represent a shard of ice.

According to a spokesman from the group, the main target of the protest is Shell, which has plans to conduct oil and gas drilling in the Arctic and has headquarters nearby.

Police were called to the scene in the early hours of the morning of 11th July.

According to the BBC, the Greenpeace spokesman added that the climbers were all well trained and that the stunt was not dangerous. Upon making it to the top of the building, the climbers plan to unveil a piece of art.

A spokesman for The Shard said that, “The Shard is being used by protestors as part of a campaign. Our primary focus is on the safety of the protesters and the workers and visitors to the building. We are working with the relevant authorities to try and ensure the safety of those concerned.
