Repsol to abandon Cuba

Oilfield Technology,

Spanish company Repsol’s CEO, Antonio Brufau, made a statement that made it clear that Repsol was unlikely to be conducting further exploration operations offshore Cuba. An exploratory test well came up dry earlier this month.

Brufau was quoted as saying, “We’re not going to drill any more … I’m almost certain we won’t do any more activities there.”

The well was based in block N27, situated some 35km north of Havana in water 1600m deep with a projected total depth of 6100 m. Repsol had drilled previously in Cuban territory, coming up dry at the Yamagua well in 2004 also.

Kristian Rix, a company spokesman for Repsol gave some insight into why the company was keen to leave. He stated that, after losing YPF to the Argentinian government, abandoning Cuba was part of a programme to consolidate assets and concentrate focus onto Repsol operations that had already proven to be productive.
