Gas leak at Statoil’s Norwegian North Sea Heimdal Platform

Statoil has revealed that a gas leak occurred at the company’s Norwegian North Sea Heimdal platform. According to the company the leak was detected during routine testing of emergency shutdown valves.

The 98 strong crew was evacuated after the alarm was sounded and standby vessels and helicopters, along with Statoil’s emergency response organisation, were mobilised.

According to reports, the leak was thankfully only short-lived, with work resuming on the rig in the early afternoon of the same day. The Heimdal platform has been closed for maintenance and is not currently producing, however, it has continued to process gas from neighbouring fields.

No one was injured as a result of the leak and evacuation. Norway’s Petroleum Safety Authority is investigating the leak.
