Petronas makes double discovery offshore Malaysia

Oilfield Technology,

Malaysia’s national oil company, Petronas has announced that it has made two gas discoveries offshore Malaysia’s Sarawak state. Together, the two discoveries amount to more than 4 trillion ft3 of natural gas, based in the Kuang North and Tukau Timar fields.

Of the two wells drilled in the Kuang North field, it was Kuang North-2, which was drilled to a depth of 10 574 ft, that encountered 2087 ft of gas column, with predicted estimates of 2.3 trillion ft3. The Kuang North field is located in Block SK316.

What marked this discovery as especially significant was that the gas here was discovered in the older carbonite section, which according to Petronas, is “opening up a new exploration play-type with substantial hydrocarbon potential in the older carbonate reservoirs offshore Sarawak.”

The discovery made in the Tukau Timar field was found through the Tukau Timur Deep-1 well, which was drilled to a depth of 15 847 ft, encountered 12 separate gas reservoirs across 600 ft of gas sand. The estimated volume of natural gas found at this site is approximately 2.1 trillion ft3. The Tukau Timur Deep-1 well is located in Block SK307, which is operated by Petronas with Shell Sarawak Berhad as 50% partners.
