SGS Opens Drilling Equipment Inspection Lab in China

Oilfield Technology,

SGS has opened a new laboratory for drilling equipment inspection (DEI) services in the Tanggu district of Tianjin, China.

This lab offers advanced testing methods in compliance with DS-1, NS-2 and API standards. Professional and qualified inspectors have access to advanced equipment and can perform gauge inspections using electro magnetic inspection (EMI) units, ultrasonic testing (UT) wall thickness gauges, VT endoscopes, portable magnetic particle testing (MPI), pit endoscopes, lead gauges, profile gauges, OD/ID gauges and black-light equipment, etc.

Drilling equipment inspection services are used in the upstream oil and gas industry to inspect the drill string, including drill pipes, bottom hole assembly (BHA), top drive, elevators and slips and to test tubing and casing (OCTG). Inspections implement advanced testing methods such as EMI, MPI, UT, liquid penetrant inspection (LPI), as well as dimension and visual inspection.

The Chinese lab can provide clients with multiple solutions. Inspectors and equipment can be sent to work on-site anywhere in the world or drill pipes and tools may be tested at the DEI yard in Tanggu.

The importance of inspection

Drill pipe inspection, scheduled at regular intervals dependent upon drilling conditions and previous failure, aims to locate and identify internal and external pitting, cuts, gouges, localised wall loss and fatigue cracks, all of which are detrimental to the integrity of pipe intended for use in drilling operations. The lab’s DEI services can help expose defects early and accurately to avoid serious damage, assure smooth operation and minimise financial risk.
