Oil spill in Russian Arctic

Various reports have revealed that a well based in the Russian Arctic suffered a major leak, which lasted for 37 hours. The leak is believed to have started when an old well was opened and its corroded plug had broken.

The leak, which was completely uncontrolled, created a spill that covered an area of 8000m² after releasing approximately 2000 t or 14 000 bbls of oil. Some reports stated that oil was being thrown up to 25 m into the air. Officials have claimed that the leak was the result of human error.

Lukcily, a fire did not break out, nor were there any injuries. The well, which is located in the Trebs field, is operated by a joint venture between Bashneft and Lukoil in a 75 – 25% split.
