13 confirmed dead in China mine flood
Chinese authorities have confirmed the deaths of 13 miners following a flood at a coal mine in northwest China on Sunday 18 July.
The final five bodies were recovered early Friday from the Jijitaizi coal mine in Jiuquan, Gansu province.
It is reported that just three of the 16 miners who had been trapped by the flood have managed to escape with their lives.
China’s coal mining industry has a poor safety record, due to inefficiencies and lack of regulation as the country attempts to keep up with demand for power. In recent weeks, 28 workers were killed in a mine in northwestern China after a fire started among electrical cables in the shaft. According to official figures, over 2631 miners were killed in 2009.
