Laing O’Rourke and Kawasaki win Icthys LNG storage tank order

Laing O’Rourke, in partnership with global LNG tank specialist Kawasaki Heavy Industries, has been awarded the EPC contract to deliver a network of four massive cryogenic tanks for the $34 billion Ichthys LNG Project at Blaydin Point, Darwin.

The cryogenic tanks package consists of two 165,000m³ LNG Tanks, one 85,000m³ Propane Tank and one 60,000m³ Butane Tank.

Laing O’Rourke established its LNG tanks partnership with Kawasaki Heavy Industries five years ago as part of a long-term strategy. The partnership’s specific intent was to deliver the best technical and engineering solutions to complex LNG projects.

Detailed engineering and procurement has already commenced on the project and will be complete before the project team mobilises to site in mid 2013, with completion due in mid 2016.

The Ichthys LNG Project is a joint venture between Inpex (76%, the operator) and Total (24%). The Ichthys LNG Project is expected to produce 8.4 million tpy of LNG and 1.6 million tpy of LPG, along with approximately 100,000 bpd of condensate at peak.
