Ongoing strikes at Cerrejon delay huge coal shipments
Coal Marketing Co., the exclusive carrier of coal from the Cerrejon mining operation in Colombia, has declared force majeure on 900,000 t of coal shipments due to ongoing industrial action.
Miners at Cerrejon, an opencast coal mine that is a joint venture between BHP Billiton, Xstrata and Anglo American, began striking on 7 February in a dispute over pay increases. Company and union representatives have been unable to reach an agreement.
Howard Gatiss, CEO of Coal Marketing Co., confirmed in an interview with Bloomberg that the company had cancelled around 10 shipments as the strikes entered their 13th day.
In 2012, Cerrejon produced around 34.6 million t of coal, half of which was exported to Europe.
