Brazilian navy investigating oil spill in Jubarte field
The Brazilian navy has reported an oil spill offshore the state of Espirito Sante, in the Jubarte field, which is operated by Petrobras. This is the latest in a series of spills that have, according to some reports, called into question the safety of the rapid expansion of the country’s oil and gas production capabilities.
The spill was first spotted by oil workers returning home and was estimated to be approximately 1 km in length and situated near Petrobras’ P-57 oil platform. The Brazilian Navy, however, has stated that at present it has no estimate of the size of the spill.
The P-57 platform operates approximately 85 km offshore Brazil in the Jubarte field, which produced 186 000 bpd in February 2012, accounting for 8% of Brazil’s total 2.1 million bpd output.
