Obama not opposed to LNG exports

The Obama administration has announced that it is not opposed to exporting US LNG, although its opinion on the matter will depend upon official analysis used to determine whether more LNG export projects should go ahead.

The US Energy Department has stated that it will suspend approval of new gas export projects until a study covering the economic effects of LNG exports is completed in the summer.

Heather Zichal, deputy assistant to the president for energy and climate change said, “We want analysis to drive the decisions … As a general rule of thumb we are certainly not opposed to LNG exports.” However, she added that, “Our goal here is to make sure we’re producing this, but also protecting American consumers and making sure we’re sending the right signal to industry and the manufacturing sector.

Several companies, such as Dominion, Sempra Energy and Southern are eager to get permission to begin LNG exports.
