Fugro delivers integrity monitoring system

Oilfield Technology,

As the operator of the Sakhalin-1 Consortium Fugro has delivered a structural monitoring system for Exxon Neftegas Ltd. The new technology has been designed to monitor the structural integrity of the Berkut oil platform in the Arkutun Dagi field.

Environmental and explosion protection equipment for the Berkut platform

The Berkut platform, located on the North East coast of Sakhalin island in the Russian Far East, faces challenges due to the sub-arctic environment, including 18 m waves, 2 m ice floes and temperatures ranging from -44°C to +32°C. It is one of the largest floatover platforms and is designed so that the topsides are isolated from the base using friction pendulum bearings.

Monitoring seismic responses and performance of friction pendulum bearings

Fugro was commissioned to provide an integrated system to monitor both the seismic response of the platform and the performance of the friction pendulum bearings. Its solution also had to satisfy the Russian GOST and GOST-Ex certification requirements and withstand the extreme environmental conditions.

Fugro constructed the environmental and explosion protection equipment at its Glasgow offices using a set of proven sensing and data acquisition equipment. WorleyParsons, the project’s lead contractor, witnessed the factory acceptance test before the equipment was shipped to the oil platform for installation.
