Apache opens CNG station
Apache and United Ag have opened the first compressed natural gas (CNG) station between Houston and Corpus Christi, offering motorists lower fuel prices.
The CNG station has opened in El Campo, which is approximately 80 miles southwest of Houston on US Highway 59. Apache added two CNG fuelling dispensers to a conventional fuelling station operated by United Ag. Motorists can now benefit from CNG fuel prices at almost half the cost of regular unleaded gasoline.
“The CNG station in El Campo is now open to serve the public as well as our Apache vehicles and other area fleets,” explained Frank Chapel, director of natural gas transportation fuels at Apache. “This station is also quite strategic as it is currently the only public-access CNG station between Corpus Christi and Houston.”
Low costs and emissions
United Ag said it was pleased to partner with Apache to offer motorists the opportunity to lower fuel costs, maintenance costs and vehicle emissions. The company plans to add four new CNG pickup trucks to its fleet.
In a similar partnership, Apache teamed up with Stripes LLC, a subsidiary of Susser Holdings Corporation, earlier this year to add CNG fuelling dispensers at Stripes convenience stores in Texas.
The new station in El Campo brings the number of public-access CNG stations operated by Apache to seven. In total, the company operates 19 CNG fueling stations in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Louisiana to support its fleet of natural gas-powered vehicles.
CNG as global fuel
Apache also enables other fleets to fuel at its 12 private CNG stations through bulk sales agreements. The company has signed commercial sales agreements with 11 companies and is actively marketing to new customers.
Natural gas is becoming increasingly popular as a transportation fuel, with more than 17.2 million natural gas-fueled vehicles worldwide. NGV Global estimates that this number will grow to more than 50 million vehicles in the next 10 years, representing about 9% of the world’s transportation fleets.
