Alabama coal mine reopens after severe weather
An underground coal mine has reopened in Alabama after ceasing operations at the end of April due to extreme weather in the southern US.
Cliff Natural Resources closed Oak Grove coal mine after storms and tornadoes cut off power and caused damage to the company’s preparation plant and conveyor system.
The mine has now resumed production but extensive damage to its above ground facilities is preventing it from shipping its mined coal. The company said in a statement that it is still assessing the damage.
Oak Grove mine has produced between 800,000 – 1.27 million tpa of metallurgical coal over the last five years.
Storms in the US have left a trail of devastation across southern states. Some 362 tornadoes are believed to have struck over the three days from the 25 - 28th April. More than 250 have been killed in the state of Alabama alone.
