ABB wins US$ 27 million Statoil contract

Oilfield Technology,

ABB has won an US$ 27 million contract from Statoil for the upgrade of safety and automation systems at the Heimdal platform in the North Sea, off the coast of Norway.

The Heimdal field has reduced its own production and is now primarily a central North Sea hub for the processing and distribution of gas. The platform receives gas from the Huldra, Oseberg, Skirne and Vale fields and exports it via Vesterled or Statpipe pipelines for processing. Heimdal accounts for 15 – 20% of total Norwegian gas production, at its peak.

Under the contract, ABB will provide a new human machine interface (HMI) for the Heimdal platform’s control system, control room modifications, simulator, fire and gas detectors, integration of telecommunication in the control room and integration management systems (IMS). According to the agreement, ABB will have complete engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) responsibility.

Following the upgrade, the Heimdal platform will have ABB’s modern 800xA Extended Automation platform as the main control system, adapted to comply with Statoil’s guidelines for workstation layout and design of process graphic.

Per Erik Holsten, Manager of ABB’s Process Automation Division in Norway, has described how ABB upgrades will contribute to profitable and safe operation of the platform. Holsten has additionally outlined that the agreement strengthens the company’s position as a supplier of maintenance, modification and service in existing fields. Furthermore, this contract confirms ABB’s ability to manage complex projects involving automation, power, telecommunication and instrumentation.
