Rosneft has commenced production on the Northern Tip of the Chayvo field on Sakhalin Island.

Russian President Vladimir Putin led the ceremony in a video link from Gorno-Altaysk. Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak and President of Rosneft, Igor Sechin, were present on Sakhalin Island.

A new industry record was set while drilling the first well on the field: the drilled depth was 10,825 m, while the horizontal displacement was 9517 m. Alexander Novak explained that state-of-the-art technologies used by Rosneft were crucial in the implementation of the project.

Igor Sechin emphasised that the new field will provide annual output on the plateau of approxiately 1.5 million tpa of oil. The Northern Tip of Chayvo field contains over 15 million t of oil and approximately 13 billion m3 of gas and will become a primary resource base for the Far Eastern LNG plant.

The Yastreb drilling unit is working on the field, currently drilling the second well, which will have a total length of approximately 11 km. There will be a well cluster on the field, consisting of five wells in total.

Sechin added that the Berkut platform, put into operation by President Putin at the end of June, would start drilling the first well in the Sea of Okhotsk.

Putin mentioned that the technologies used on the Sakhalin Island could also be used in other production regions, including the Arctic shelf. He congratulated oil and gas industry workers on their professional holiday, celebrated on the first Sunday in September.
