Alstom to provide generators for Zambian dam project

Chinese engineering firm, Sinohydro Corp. ltd., has awarded a contract worth more than € 20 million to Alstom, a major producer of hydropower equipment and services. The contract, signed in September 2011, is to provide key engineering equipment to the new Itezhi-Tezhi hydroelectric dam in Zambia.

The hydropower station will be constructed on the Kafue River in central Zambia, about 260 km south of the country’s capita, Lusaka. Due to be completed in 2015, the plant will supply 120 MW of renewable electricity to Zambia, where demand for electricity is having to increase in order to support the development of the copper industry.

Alstom will supply two 60 MW Kaplan turbine and generator unites and other equipment including the main inlet valve, governing and exciting system. The company will also be responsible for commissioning and installation supervision.

Zambia has an installed base of 1970 MW, of which approximately 1880 MW comes from hydroelectric sources. Peak demand in the country reaches 1580 MW, which outstrips current electricity generation (approximately 1440 MW).
